Navigating the Path from Education to a Profession in Quantity Surveying
Can you share a little about your journey before joining our apprenticeship programme?
Hi, my name is Cian Faughey, and I am currently studying Quantity Surveying at Newry SRC. Alongside my studies, I have been given the opportunity to work for MTM Engineering.
To pursue this career path, I first completed my GCSE’s and A Levels at the Abbey Grammar CBS. I have always been interested in the electrical industry, and this role provides the perfect opportunity to balance on-site experience with the benefits of working in an office.
Could you highlight some key experiences from your apprenticeship journey?
I have been working with MTM Engineering since I finished school in June 2024, and I have made significant progress in developing my knowledge about the electrical industry. I have had the opportunity to work at MTM’s three offices in Slane, Armagh, and Strabane, which has allowed me to meet many coworkers across different areas of the company.
I have upcoming work trips planned to Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands, where I will visit some of our biggest projects, including some of the largest Data Centres in the world. This is extremely rewarding, as it shows my hard work has paid off.
Are there any specific skills that you have developed, such as any tools or resources you have found most helpful in advancing your skills?
Since starting my role at MTM, my knowledge and understanding of electrical equipment and the construction industry have greatly expanded. I am now highly confident in using various software tools to price jobs, including:

Excel
In addition to expanding my knowledge and gaining new skills, I have also built strong friendships with many MTM team members and had the opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds and departments.
Can you explain how mentorship has played a key role in your journey and how this has helped you?
Mentorship has allowed me to gain knowledge in this industry much faster than I would have by working alone. Having excellent mentors has given me the confidence to work independently on some projects, as my knowledge has significantly expanded.
My mentorship has come from Kenneth Higgins (Commercial Manager) and Krzysztof Bugaj (Estimating Manager). Both Kenneth and Krzysztof have been incredibly helpful in training me. In addition to my mentors, I have also received support from the senior apprentices at MTM, who have provided me with opportunities to thrive in my role.
What are three key pieces of advice you would give to future applicants looking to kickstart their career?
I would strongly advise anyone to consider this career pathway due to the many benefits it offers. For example, gaining a solid understanding of the industry at a young age enables you to progress quickly within the field.
Another advantage of this job is the opportunity to travel across Europe to visit MTM projects, while forming new friendships with team members along the way.
A higher-level apprenticeship allows you to earn while developing practical, industry-specific skills and qualifications up to degree level. It provides hands-on experience and offers clear career progression without the burden of tuition fees, making it a cost-effective alternative to university.
